Committed To Serving The King and His Kingdom
"Jehovah Reigns"
In the mid eighties I had the wonderful privilege of leading worship in a church in Columbus, Ohio. It was there that I was introduced to the ministry of praise and worship as well as given the opportunity to grow as a musician and worship leader. My role also consisted of being the lead musician. As the lead musician I also felt it important to not only rehearse songs, but prepare ourselves spiritually by spending time on prayer personally and corporately. One Saturday I made the decision that before we would rehearse any songs or play one note on our instruments that we would first pray for one hour. I must tell you not everyone was excited about this approach. I also made a stipulation that if you did not show up for prayer, you would not play in service. That motivated some to come out! After about two or three weeks of doing this, I decided that this particular morning we would pray and then just wait before the Lord before playing. After prayer and waiting for a while, I began to play these simple chords and eventually began to sing these words:
Jehovah reigns forever,
Jehovah reigns forever,
Jehovah reigns forever more
He is the First, the Last, the Great I AM,
The Mighty God in whom we stand
He holds all power in His hands,
And leads us on in victory... Jehovah reigns
He is God, Jehovah, He forever reigns
Now over twenty years later it is amazing to me that this song that was birthed in a rehearsal after coming out of a time of prayer has literally gone around the world and is recognized by Word Music and one of the favorite praise and worship songs of modern times! It was not a song that was crafted or intentionally thought up. It simply flowed out of a time of prayer and waiting before the Lord! So I guess the moral to this story is... Pray before you play!
